After reading Tolstoy’s short story “The Death of Ivan Ilyich” answer the following questions. Make sure to reference specific examples from the text (using quotes with page numbers would be the most effective). – minimum 15 sentences (total).
The short story: https://archive.org/details/deathofivanilyic0000tols/mode/1up
NOTE: Be specific in your posts and comments and reference specific details from the text. I deduct points for vague answers.
Questions:
-By saying that Ivan’s life “had been most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible” Tolstoy, obviously, disapproves if Ivan’s life. But why? What was so terrible (“most terrible”!) about his life and why? What was missing in his life?
-We learn about Ivan’s death on the very first page from a short announcement in a local newspaper and the rest of the story is dedicated to conveying Ivan’s experience of dying. So, apparently, Tolstoy removes all the suspense from the story by not leaving any chance for the character to survive. Why did Tolstoy choose such a structure? What is the major theme of the story? Why Tolstoy describes Ivan’s dying in so many details? What part of Ivan’s dying does Tolstoy focus and why?
-What stages does Ivan go through in his suffering and what does he realize at the end? What are his regrets?
Thank you ^^
